Empowering Black Maternal Health: The Vision of the Ebony Birth Collective

Updated: Jan 15

Motherhood is, for many women, one of the most transformative journeys life has to offer. However, for many Black mothers, instead of being a time of joy, maternity is a path plagued with anxiety. Alarming statistics have indicated that Black women are nearly three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than White women are, and that Black newborns are more than two times more likely to die than White newborns. These numbers are disturbing and reveal an injustice in our healthcare system that has been overlooked for far too long. The time is now to enact change. The Ebony Birth Collective was founded with the goal of raising awareness about this pressing matter and empowering Black women through education and advocacy.

Mission of Ebony Birth Collective

The Ebony Birth Collective’s primary aim is to raise awareness about the severe healthcare disparity that is the Black maternal health crisis. We hope to educate others about this matter by sharing stories and statistics, as well as advocating for real systemic change that will give Black women the high-quality healthcare they rightfully deserve.

Make a Difference

Real change is enacted through several individuals joining together as one community. The Ebony Birth Collective encourages advocates for Black maternal health to amplify their voices in the following ways.

  1. Stay Informed: Follow the Ebony Birth Collective, along with other organizations advocating for Black maternal health, online, to keep up with events, initiatives and news.

  2. Share Your Story: Black mothers are encouraged to share their experiences. Your voice is valued, and every story helps bring awareness to the change that needs to be enacted. If you feel comfortable, feel free to email your story to us at: ebonybirthcollective@gmail.com, and we will feature your story on our blog. We celebrate successes and failures -- both are necessary to uplift a community.

  3. Donate: Financial contributions are also useful for funding research, events and initiatives. See our "How You Can Help" page for organizations working in this space, to which you can donate.

A Future of Empowerment

Every mother is entitled to safe healthcare before, during and after pregnancy. No mother should have to fear for her or her baby’s life. Race should not ever be a factor in whether or not somebody receives high quality healthcare. Together, we can create a future where all mothers feel empowered, safe and confident during their pregnancies. The time is now to be the change that our healthcare system demands, and that Black mothers across America need.
